Material Selection is Critical
Chemical process lines carry media that can rapidly corrode standard carbon steel components. The wetted parts of a PEECO flow switch — the body, paddle, stem, and bellows — must be compatible with the process fluid to ensure reliable long-term operation.
PEECO offers a wide range of body materials and can engineer custom configurations for unusual media. Always provide the full chemical name, concentration, and temperature range when requesting a quote.
Material Guide by Media Type
| Media | Recommended Body | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dilute acids (HCl, H₂SO₄) | 316SS or Teflon-lined | Avoid carbon steel; Teflon for high concentrations |
| Caustics (NaOH, KOH) | 316SS | Carbon steel acceptable at low concentrations |
| Chlorinated solvents | Monel or 316SS | Avoid standard elastomers; specify Teflon seals |
| Seawater / brine | 316SS or Monel | High chloride — carbon steel will pit rapidly |
| Hydrocarbons (oil, fuel) | Carbon steel (standard) | Standard construction suitable for most hydrocarbons |
| Highly corrosive / exotic | Teflon-lined or custom | Contact PEECO engineering for unusual media |
Hazardous Location Considerations
Most chemical and petrochemical plants have classified electrical areas. Specify the E Series (explosion-proof, Class I Group D) for Division 1 or Division 2 locations. The H Series is available for high-pressure chemical service above 600 PSI.
Teflon Option
The PEECO Teflon option provides all wetted parts in PTFE or a Teflon bellows assembly. Available on N Series housings up to 100 PSI and 450°F. Also available in KYNAR for additional chemical resistance.
